Uruguay, Carnaval, Maté & Musica

Uruguayan drink "Mate", like herbal tea

people in montevideo carry a cup of "mate" around accompanied by a flask of hot water for refills. as demonstrated here by my Uruguayan friend Johanna

i have managed to catch some of the montevideo carnaval. not quite as big as their neighbours in brasil but it was good fun nonetheless.

i discovered 3 new uruguayan styles of music this week.

Murga

best i can make out, a murga band is made up of several male vocalists singing in harmony, also some of the songs are acompanied by music. the murga band at this carnival had about 20 members.

Candombe

candombe is drum based music with african influences. the dancing to this is pretty spectacular...

Plena

a Uruguayan form of cumbia.
