The Three hour boat trip from Argentina to Uruguay was very pleasant, i met an old couple on the boat who spoke to me in length about the country and even gave me their contact details, should i need anything.
the people have an accent more or less the same as argentina, using that trademark "sh" sound for the letter "y" that is not to be found anywhere else in the spanish speaking world. i am growing fond of it actually and sometimes i use it when chatting just for kicks.
The town of montevideo is very nice, and definitly echoes many generations of spanish and italian immigration. it is remarkably peaceful for a capital city with over 1 million people. a drastic comparison with the intensity of Buenos Aires. but then as the old couple on the boat mentioned, buenos aires, being so close is like a second city in uruguay. so i gues this takes some of the heat off montevideo. it is notably more expensive here though, and for the time being i have found myself taking the drastic measures of going to the supermarket instead of the restaurant as i had done in buenos aires before discovering the magic all-you-can-eat buffet.
